pdf-animal-phulkari-embroidery-pattern
PDF Animal Phulkari Embroidery Pattern

This is a digital pattern to make a 50x55 cm Phulkari tapestry. This design is an inspired recreation of a Bawan (52) Phulkari. Traditionally, a Bawan Bagh featured 52 distinct blocks arranged in a grid across the shawl, with each grid showcasing a unique design. Because stitching 52 individual motifs required hundreds of hours of intense concentration, a Bawan Bagh was rarely crafted for everyday use; it was lovingly embroidered by grandmothers or mothers for a bride's wedding dowry and cherished as a prized family heirloom passed down through generations. While this design doesn't include all 52 blocks, each grid compartment follows the unique design philosophy borrowed from the Bawan Bagh. The motifs within the grids depict village life and animals typical of Sainchi (storytelling) Phulkari. To honor traditional single-color Phulkaris, this piece uses a tone-on-tone palette of coral thread on madder-dyed linen. By altering the direction of the embroidery stitches, the thread catches the light differently, creating a rich, dramatic sheen across the entire design.

Stitches and Embroidery Techniques:
- Satin Stitch: Forms the main fill of the motifs.
