21 Nov 2026 Sindhi Embroidery Workshop in Startup Barreiro
This workshop introduces participants the tribal and nomadic embroidery traditions from the Thar region of Sindh, Pakistan. Using a large Banjara Embroidery Kit by Wenlin Studio, participants will explore techniques characteristic of Sindhi and Thari embroideries.
Gul will guide participants through mirror work, a hallmark of Sindhi embroidery, along with other traditional stitches commonly found in regional embroideries. The workshop will take place in the studio at Startup Barreiro. The kit is designed to include all the information needed to continue and complete the embroidery at home after the class.
By the end of the workshop, participants will gain an understanding of Thari embroidery from Sindh, the cultural complexity of the region, and the diverse communities that have shaped these textile traditions.

About the Kit:
Sindhi Thari embroidery traditions from Pakistan inspire this design. Originating in the Tharparkar region and shaped by centuries of movement across desert landscapes. It is recognized for its bold geometric motifs, vibrant cotton threads, rhythmic hand stitching, and frequent use of mirror work. Rooted in the practices of nomadic and semi-nomadic communities, Thari embroidery reflects a deep connection to land, mobility, and cultural identity. Through this kit, I aim to honor and revive these traditions, telling a story of migration, resilience, and belonging through every stitch.
The central motif features a stylized diamond, framed by geometric elements. We will use four traditional stitches with the provided 6-strand cotton skeins. An instruction guide is included to walk you through the full embroidery process.
Kit Contents:
- 32 × 32 cm 100% cotton/linen panel, pre-drawn design
- Mirrors (only available for workshop)
- 13 cotton embroidery skeins (6-strand): 7 Navy, 4 Blue, 2 Grey (Participant will have a choice to choose a warm set of colors)
- Embroidery needles (suitable for 3-strand and 6-strand work)
- Stitch & color guide with diagrams and step-by-step instructions in English

Este workshop apresenta aos participantes as tradições de bordado tribal e nómada da região de Thar em Sind, Paquistão. Usando um kit de bordado Banjara grande da Wenlin Studio, os participantes vão explorar técnicas características dos bordados de Sind e Thar.
A Gul vai guiar os participantes no trabalho com espelhos (mirror work), uma imagem de marca do bordado de Sind, juntamente com outros pontos tradicionais comummente encontrados nos bordados regionais. O workshop terá lugar no estúdio na Startup Barreiro. O kit foi concebido para incluir toda a informação necessária para continuar e terminar o bordado em casa após a aula.
No final do workshop, os participantes terão uma compreensão do bordado Thari de Sind, da complexidade cultural da região e das diversas comunidades que moldaram estas tradições têxteis.
Este workshop é ensinado em inglês e português básico por Gul E Raana, originária do Punjab, Paquistão, e fundadora da Wenlin Studio — um projeto dedicado à sustentabilidade nos têxteis com bordados e tinturaria natural do Indo.

Sobre o Kit:
Este design é inspirado nas tradições de bordado Sindhi Thari do Paquistão, originárias da região de Tharparkar e moldadas por séculos de deslocação através de paisagens desérticas. É reconhecido pelos seus motivos geométricos arrojados, linhas de algodão vibrantes, costura manual rítmica e uso frequente de espelhos. Enraizado nas práticas de comunidades nómadas e semi-nómadas, o bordado Thari reflete uma ligação profunda à terra, à mobilidade e à identidade cultural. Através deste kit, pretendo honrar e reavivar estas tradições, contando uma história de migração, resiliência e pertença a cada ponto.
O motivo central apresenta um losango estilizado, emoldurado por elementos geométricos. Usaremos quatro pontos tradicionais com as meadas de algodão de 6 fios fornecidas. Está incluído um guia de instruções para o guiar em todo o processo de bordado.

Requisitos: Os participantes devem ter mais de 14 anos. Algum conhecimento prévio de costura/bordado será benéfico para o participante.
